Staff development in small businesses often involves miscommunication, especially with inexperienced Gen-Z employees in service roles. Our research revealed that many lack structured training and feel pressured by unspoken expectations, leading to hesitation in asking questions. CommTrack aims to address this by offering an interactive "guidebook" to help smaller businesses train new staff more effectively.

We interviewed 6 users (Both staff and supervisors) and referenced 6 scholarly articles to discover more about workplace dynamics. We found that younger staff across various industries seek transparency, supportive environments, and clear instructions in their workplaces.

We defined two primary user groups. Managers want to know that their staff are competent in the required skills without constant supervision, and the staff want flexibility and encouragement for their learning pathway during their foundational development. We focused on a coffee shop scenario to ground the design in a tangible context.

Rather than requiring new employees to read a manual or watch a multiple tutorials and then simple expect them to be ready to hit the espresso, there should be something more involved that assisst in the building of a working relationship between managers and staff. We felt that the supported learning desired by our staff-users could be bolstered through a feature that utilizes some form of feedback loop for training skills.

The main pathway of the interface features a training cycle with an in-app messaging feature that submits a "Self-Assessment" form completed by the staff, that can be reviewed with a manager. This provides a platform for accountability between both user groups. Other aspects of the app that round out this experience would be the repository of lessons, the homepage with quick view of scheduling, and the individual learning modules.

Part of this project was inspired through reading "The Culture Code" by Daniel Coyle. An excellent book that explores what sets the foundation for highly successful groups and organizations. The goal with my work in the UX field is to work to address some of these more nebulous problems. The idea that we can use digital tools in a way that connects people within their working environments feels like meaningful work.
